MOLAA

THE MUSEUM OF LATIN AMERICAN ART
Our headquarters is the Long Beach California Museum of Latin American Art, a museum that expands the knowledge and appreciation of modern and contemporary Latin American art through its collection, pioneering exhibitions, stimulating educational programs and attractive cultural events such as the VI Forum World of Mexican Gastronomy, Long Live Mexican Cuisine in North America.

The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) was founded in 1996 in Long Beach, California and serves the metropolitan area of Los Angeles. MOLAA is the only museum in the United States dedicated to Latin American modern and contemporary art and Latin art. Since its inception, MOLAA has doubled in size and has added a 15,000 square foot sculpture garden. Its permanent collection now has more than 1,600 works of art.

The Museum is located in the fast-developing East Village Arts District. Between 1913 and 1918, the site that now occupies the Museum was the home of Balboa Amusement Producing Company, then the most productive and innovative silent film studio in the world. Before Hollywood existed, Balboa was king of the big screen, producing up to 20,000 feet of negative film per week.

The building that was renovated and became the Balboa Events Center of MOLAA could have been part of Balboa’s old movie studios. The exhibition galleries, the administrative offices and the MOLAA store are located on what was once a skating rink known as the Hippodrome. Built in the late 1920s, after movie studios had left, the Hippodrome was a haven for skaters for four decades. The building served as a senior health center for fifteen years. The high vaulted ceilings and beautiful hardwood floors were perfect for the final metamorphosis of the Hippodrome at the Museum of Latin American Art.
